Like many of our clients, the owners of this property had inherited a somewhat overgrown garden that felt unusable for a young family. Their requirements included a complete modernisation of the garden area, the addition of a lawn area towards the back designed to catch the evening sun and the replacement of the paved patio near the house. In general, the garden needed clearing and levelling to reveal the space.
The first and most important part of our approach was to remove an awkward step that split the garden in two. This allowed us to install a larger artificial lawn area, designed especially for rough and tumble games for children. We replaced the current paving with mint sandstone which had the effect of brightening the area to the front of the garden. At the back, we added high quality composite Mill Board decking which needs no maintenance. New trellising was added and painted light grey for a contemporary feel and garden lighting was used to highlight the back of the garden – especially the specimen plants such as the large Japanese maple.
This garden required careful thought due to the mix of light and shade throughout the space. We chose plants that added colour and interest including tall ornamental grasses to offer height and movement. Climbers such as Trachelospermum were also used to soften the grey painted trellis.
This garden was transformed into the exact space any growing family would need. It had the perfect zone for children to play (but without the inconvenience of mud in the house!) and more grown up spaces in the form of decking and paved areas for outdoor entertaining. More of the garden could be used throughout the day and throughout the year. The clients were thrilled with the results.
