Our client expressed to us her love of arts and crafts and her wish to create a garden that expressed this part of her personality while still staying true to her love of modern architecture. Additionally she wanted flowers that could make their way into her home and edible plants that would allow her to make the most of the garden space. The overall theme was an English country garden, with an arts and crafts feel and touches of modern architecture to mirror the new house extension that was highly contemporary. Finally the scheme needed a BBQ area towards the back.
We aimed to take the brief and run with it. We added various planting schemes designed to fit the clients needs, but the main elements were hard landscaping including a small brick patio at the rear, a horizontal trellis and a pergola that featured modern stainless steel tension ropes for that nod towards contemporary architectural styles.
We added a number of edible plants including strawberries and rhubarb as well as some more unusual varieties such as Apios Americana. These were dotted among more conventional plants and flowers. We ensured that there were flowers that can be cut in the spring and summer for indoor colour alongside the outdoor colour. The final addition were Ilex balls for added structure and interest.
The client loved the architectural elements of the garden and has made good use of the patio area for entertaining and BBQs. The plants are coming along nicely and will soon be ready for harvesting.
